Zack Carson

Data Scientist III at Dataminr

Zack Carson, PhD, has a diverse work experience spanning various fields. Zack is currently working as a Data Scientist at Dataminr since March 2021. Previously, they served as a Data Scientist at Truu from June 2020 to March 2021.

Prior to their roles in data science, Zack worked at the University of Virginia where they held multiple positions. From March 2018 to May 2020, they served as a Graduate Research Assistant, conducting statistical analysis methods in Mathematica, C++, and Fortran to explore fundamental physics using gravitational wave observations. In this role, they examined neutron star coalescence to study ultra-dense nuclear structures and investigated black hole collisions to test alternative theories of gravity. Additionally, Zack was a Head TA for Intro Physics Labs for Engineers, a Graduate grader, and a Discussion section TA for physics major electromagnetism from August 2014 to May 2020. Zack also worked as a Graduate Research Assistant in quantum optics and quantum information from March 2016 to March 2018, and in high energy physics from December 2014 to March 2016.

Before their academic pursuits, Zack gained work experience at Vivint as a Technician from May 2012 to August 2014. Zack also worked at the University of Utah as an Astronomy Outreach TA, where they fostered outreach activities related to astronomy for the public, K-12 schools, and boy scouts from January 2011 to May 2014, under the guidance of Professor Tabitha Beuhler.

Furthermore, Zack has worked as a Delivery Driver at Flowers on Main from February 2011 to May 2013, and as a Runner at Thanksgiving Point Golf Course from March 2008 to August 2010.

Zack Carson, PhD, completed their education in Physics with a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Virginia. Zack attended the University from 2014 to 2020, focusing on theoretical physics. Prior to that, they obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Utah, where they majored in theoretical physics, applied mathematics, and astronomy. In addition to their academic degrees, Zack also obtained certifications in machine shop training from the University of Virginia Physics Department in May 2016.
