Spacecraft Mechanical Engineer at Dawn Aerospace

Julia Sothmann's work experience includes roles as a Spacecraft Mechanical Engineer at Dawn Aerospace starting in 2023, a Mechanical Engineer - Telescope Systems at Deutsches SOFIA Institut (DSI) from 2018 to 2023, and a Master Thesis Student at Mercedes-AMG GmbH in 2017. Prior to that, they worked as a Research Engineering Intern at DST Group in 2016 and held various positions at ASM Student Society 'Enlightness', including Chair and Freshmen Mentor and Teaching Assistant, from 2015 to 2016. Julia also worked as an Office Assistant (Seasonal Employment) at Marienhaus Klinikum im Kreis Ahrweiler, KH St Josef Adenau from 2007 to 2015, an Intern (40+ hours/week) at Black Falcon GmbH & Co. KG in 2014, and a Chassis Engineer (20+ hours/week) at Formula Student Team Delft from 2012 to 2013.

Julia Sothmann holds a Master's Degree in Aerospace Structures and Materials - Manufacturing, which they obtained from Delft University of Technology in 2017. Prior to that, they completed their Bachelor's Degree in Aerospace Engineering from the same university in 2015. In 2013, they also attended Iowa State University for a brief period, focusing on Mechanical & Sustainable Engineering. Julia started their educational journey at Erich-Klausener-Gymnasium Adenau, where they completed their Abitur (university entrance) in 2010, majoring in Physics, English, and Chemistry.

In addition to their degrees, Julia has obtained various certifications. Julia received the SolidWorks Advanced certification from GoEngineer in April 2022. In June 2020, they completed the Predictive Multiscale Materials Design certification from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In March 2020, they obtained the Digital and Predictive Asset Management certification from clockworkX GmbH. Furthermore, in May 2019, Julia earned the SolidWorks Essentials certification, also from GoEngineer.
