Ben Heffer has a diverse work experience spanning multiple industries and roles. Ben started their career as an Executive Officer at the Department of Transport in 1984 and worked there until 1989. Ben then joined Bradford & Bingley as a Financial Services Adviser, where they gained extensive knowledge in cashiering, branch administration, and advising customers on insurances and investments. In 1990, they joined Countrywide Independent Advisers Ltd as a Pensions Researcher, responsible for assessing investment performance and product suitability, as well as conducting research and designing expert systems in financial planning.
In 1994, Ben joined Defaqto as the Pensions Research Manager, overseeing a team of researchers and managing the Aequos database. Ben subsequently advanced to the role of Associate Director, where they led a team of 20 researchers and data collection personnel and was part of the Executive Committee responsible for day-to-day operations. In 2004, Ben became the Principal Consultant & Insight Team Leader, with a focus on defining and implementing Defaqto's service proposition, providing consultancy services for insurers and investment houses, and writing market reports. Later, they transitioned to the role of Insight Analyst - Life & Protection, where they specialized in analyzing life and protection products.

Ben Heffer attended the Royal Latin School from 1975 to 1981. After completing their secondary education, they went on to pursue a Bachelor's Degree in Plant Sciences at the University of Leeds from 1981 to 1984.
