Defend the Environment is a board-led environmental civil society organization (CSO) committed to the protection and preservation of both the environment and human rights. The organization focuses on promoting environmental sustainability, ensuring the safeguarding of natural resources, and advocating for human rights in the context of environmental protection. It was officially registered with the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia Agency for Civil Society Organizations under Registry Number 5347 on January 18, 2021 (E.C.), in compliance with the Civic Society Organizations Proclamation No. 1113/2019. Through its work, Defend the Environment aims to create a safer, healthier, and more sustainable environment for all, aligning its activities with the principles of justice and human rights. 

The organization utilizes a range of strategies to achieve its mission, including:

Advocacy: Promoting policies and actions that safeguard the environment.

Legal Monitoring: Tracking the enforcement of environmental laws and regulations.

Capacity Building: Strengthening the skills and resources of individuals and organizations working on environmental issues.

Awareness Creation: Educating the public about environmental issues and sustainable practices.

Assisting Environmental Law Enforcement: Supporting the effective implementation and enforcement of environmental laws and regulations. 

Public Interest Litigation: Engaging in legal actions that benefit the public and address environmental harm.

The organization's ultimate goal is to establish and maintain a clean, healthy, and safe environment that meets the needs of all people while safeguarding the planet for future generations.
