Caroline Ward

Lead Social Researcher, National Biodiversity at DEFRA

Caroline Ward's work experience includes various roles in the field of research and ecology. Caroline has worked as a Lead Social Researcher at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs since 2022. Prior to that, they were a Senior Research Officer at the same organization from 2022 to 2023. Caroline also served as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of York from 2020 to 2022. Caroline held the position of Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Leeds from 2018 to 2020, where they conducted research on protected area governance and its impacts on local communities. Caroline also worked as an Ecologist at AECOM in 2014 and as a Terrestrial Project Scholar at Global Vision International in 2014. In addition, they gained field experience as an Assistant Research Officer at Frontier Madagascar in 2011 and as a Field Volunteer at the American Museum of Natural History in 2012. Caroline began their career as a Research Assistant at the Belize Jaguar Corridor Project in 2010, where they conducted research on jaguar populations and prey species.

Caroline Ward has a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Environmental Social Science from the University of Leeds, which they obtained from 2014 to 2018. Prior to that, they pursued a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Conservation Science at Imperial College London from 2012 to 2013. Caroline also holds a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Zoology from the University of Southampton, completed from 2008 to 2011. Additionally, they obtained a BTEC in Tropical Habitat Conservation from Frontier in 2007, and completed their A Levels, specializing in Chemistry, Maths, and Biology, at Channing School from 2000 to 2007. Caroline has also obtained additional certifications in Emergency First Response from Emergency First Response in 2014, and in Open Water from PADI in 2013.
