David Painter currently serves as the Chief Information Officer at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) since October 2015, leading the engagement between Defra's Digital, Data and Technology Services team and various delivery bodies to enhance outcomes for the natural environment. Previously, David held roles at Natural England, including Head of ICT & Knowledge Services, where responsibilities included overseeing ICT and information services, and managing projects aligned with biodiversity and land management. Additionally, David was a Project Manager at the Rural Development Service, Defra, from 2004 to 2007. David holds a BSc (Hons) in Management Science from The University of Manchester and completed A levels in English, Maths, and History at Bishop Wand School.
