Joel Smith

Head Of Infrastructure, Security & Service Architecture at DEFRA

Joel Smith has a strong background in IT and technology leadership. Joel started their career as a Scientific Computing Officer at Central Science Laboratory in 1997 and later became the Network Service Team Leader, responsible for desktop PCs, network infrastructure, windows servers, and IT security. In 1999, they joined The Food and Environment Research Agency, where they served as the Head of IS for 13 years. During their time at Defra, Joel held several key roles, including Deputy CTO and Head of Infrastructure and Applications. Currently, they are the Head of Infrastructure, Security & Service Architecture at Defra.

Joel Smith received their BSc in Chemical Sciences from the University of Leeds in 1989. Joel then pursued a PhD in Physical Chemistry at the same university and graduated in 1994. In 2012, they obtained certification as a Certified Enterprise Architect from the institution TOGAF 9.1.
