Thomas Catchpole is the Head of Applied Fisheries Research at Cefas, where they provide scientific and policy advice to the UK Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) on marine and fisheries issues. In this role, Thomas is responsible for enhancing the sustainability of commercial fisheries through national and international research collaborations. They have led various initiatives, including the Fisheries Science Partnership programme and the UK Seafood Innovation Fund, and have actively participated in the International Council for the Exploration of the Seas (ICES). Thomas's previous experience includes serving as the Strategic Marine Policy Advisor to the UK Secretary of State for the Environment and being a member of the EU Commission's Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee on Fisheries. They hold a PhD in Discards in Commercial Fisheries from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and a Master's degree in Marine and Fisheries Science with Distinction from the University of Aberdeen.
