Degrowth Japan (DJ) was formally established in 2024, emerging from the grassroots collective known as "Tokyo Snails." For years before formalization, this diverse group of academics, artists, farmers, and activists gathered to question our world's growth-centric economic paradigm and explore alternative visions for society.

The name "Tokyo Snails" embodied our philosophy—moving deliberately, living simply, and leaving gentle traces on the earth. While modern society often demands speed and efficiency, we found wisdom in slowness and sufficiency.

In 2024, recognizing the growing urgency of ecological crises and increasing public interest in post-growth economics, we formalized our structure as Degrowth Japan to expand our impact while maintaining our grassroots spirit.
