Jose Sotelo

Senior AI Researcher at Descript

Jose Sotelo has a strong background in AI research. Jose began their career in 2012 as a Research Assistant at Banco de Mexico. That same year, they also held an Aalto Science Institute Internship at Aalto University School of Science and Technology, where they worked on the problem of divergence selection in nonnegative matrix factorization. In 2014, they were a Data Science for Social Good Fellow at the Georgia Institute of Technology. There, they worked in interdisciplinary teams with faculty mentors to develop solutions in domains such as transportation, energy, urban development, and sustainability. In 2017, Jose became Co-Founder and AI Researcher at Lyrebird AI. Most recently, in 2019, they joined Descript as a Senior AI Researcher, where they are doing research on generative algorithms and deep learning.

Jose Sotelo has an extensive educational background. Jose obtained a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Applied Mathematics from the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México between 2008 and 2012. Jose then went on to earn a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Computer Science from the Université de Montréal in 2014 - 2016. Jose also obtained three certifications from edX and Coursera in Artificial Intelligence, Probabilistic Graphical Models, and Machine Learning in 2013 and 2012, respectively. Currently, Jose is pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Computer Science at the Université de Montréal, which they are expected to complete in 2022.
