Data Lead at Development Seed

Ruben leads the Data Team at Development Seed, which specializes in generating geospatial datasets. He continuously pushes for better ways to map and is a prolific contributor of open source tools that facilitate geographic data processing and mapping workflows. These include osmlint, osmlint-osmium, to-fix for JOSM, turnlanes-tagging , osm-obj-info.

He has been an active mapper on OpenStreetMap since 2011, working to improve global data availability. Ruben led efforts to open up government data in Peru, and worked with the provincial government of Huamanga, Ayacucho to coordinate the release of street-level data. He has worked on data importation into OpenStreetMap such as importing NYC building footprints, LA building footprints, Peru Schools import, and continues to work to communicate its benefits, showcasing this through open mapping projects, which includes the first map of the city’s public bus routes.

Before joining Development Seed, Ruben worked for Mapbox as manager of Data Team/Engineering. Ruben studied Systems Engineering at the San Cristobal de Huamanga National University in Ayacucho, Peru.
