DHOW is currently an acclaimed local restaurant and retail establishment. Founded in Maputo, Mozambique, Dhow represents a contemporary concept, showcasing an eclectic mix of fashion and design within an art gallery and a restaurant. Today, DHOW is one of Africa’s most attractive eating and shopping locations representing the evolution of a traditional retail space into a lifestyle oriented destination.

Driving along the leafy residential Ponta Vermelha suburb, past the President’s Palace, you come to a headland overlooking the Baia de Maputo. Crisscrossing the bay below are a scattering of dhows, the occasional cargo ship, and in the mid distance the new 3km Maputo-Catembe suspension bridge, the longest in Southern Africa.

Entering a courtyard filled with sculptures fabricated from weapons used during the civil war, you then pass through an “Aladdin’s cave” of African and Oriental art, DHOW Art Gallery.

DHOW Gallery embraces the legacy of the dhow sailing vessel which traded merchandise and objets d’art from distant exotic locations. The dhow, the heartbeat of East African culture, has been carrying people, goods and treasures for hundreds of years.

The works exhibited in the Gallery are traditional pieces, representative of the subjects, techniques and styles from many regions of Mozambique, Africa and Asia. The visual arts range from jewelry and dress, to paintings, furniture, masks, musical instruments and sculptures.

Merging with the gallery is the trendy restaurant with spectacular views of the Indian Ocean and passing dhows. Here you can enjoy a delicious fusion of Mediterranean and Mozambican style food and patisseries, while relaxing in the idyllic setting. Music plays an integral part in enhancing our experience.

TripAdvisor and other travel and restaurant review sites regularly rate Dhow as the best destination in Maputo.
