Alan D. Snell

Alan Snell, MD, MMM, recently served six years as the Chief Medical Informatics Officer for St. Vincent Health, an integrated healthcare organization with 16,000 associates, 22 hospital sites and over $6 Billion annual revenue. In this role, he led innovative initiatives for new health information technologies in clinical settings. Dr. Snell also developed Telemedicine, Remote Patient Monitoring and other Telehealth demonstration projects for St. Vincent’s parent organization, Ascension Health, the nation’s largest not-for-profit healthcare system. He co-authored a 2010 ARRA Beacon Community Grant program with Indiana Health Information Exchange and was Principle Investigator for a successful two-year clinical trial that reduced hospital readmissions by 60-70% using home monitoring plus video-conferencing technologies and new transitional care processes. In June 2012, Dr. Snell was named one of eighty-two “Vanguards” by Dr. Farzad Mostashari, the National Coordinator for Health IT.

Prior to joining St. Vincent Health, Dr. Snell conceptualized one of the nation’s first Health Information Exchanges in the mid-1990s and later served as CEO of Michiana Health Information Network. In his first CMIO role at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in South Bend, he led the implementation of electronic medical records in over 120 physician practices in northern Indiana.

As a healthcare IT consultant, Dr. Snell designed and created the “Intelligent Medical Home Project” that debuted at HIMSS 2014 in Orlando. The 1500 sq. foot exhibit showcased the latest technologies and data management for in-home virtual care. He works closely with several tech start-ups, advising them on product development and introducing their innovative solutions to healthcare organizations and their providers.

Dr. Snell serves as a director for the Regenstrief Institute of Medical Informatics and the Seton Specialty Hospitals in Indianapolis/Lafayette, IN. He is a graduate of the Indiana University School of Medicine and completed his Family Practice Residency in South Bend, IN. He was a primary care physician in South Bend for 27 years and volunteered as a clinical faculty in two residency programs there. In1999, Dr. Snell completed a Masters in Medical Management at Tulane University School of Medicine and Public Health. Dr. Snell is an adjunct professor of Clinical Informatics at Indiana University and also donates his time serving on state-wide projects including Better Healthcare for Indiana and was appointed by the Governor to the board of the Indiana Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Agency.
