Douglas E. Rosendale

As a board-certified General Surgeon and Harvard fellowship trained in the new physician specialty of “Clinical Informatics,” Dr. Douglas Rosendale is helping to establish this important new professional discipline. Prior to becoming an entrepreneur, Dr. Rosendale was Senior Physician Advisor for Clinical Informatics in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Office of Health Information. He was the co-CMIO (Chief Medical Information Officer) of the VA/DoD Interagency Program Office for the joint electronic health record. He founded and chaired the Health IT Innovation Development (HITIDE) program under the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) and the Networking IT R&D (NITRD), which established a governance model for innovation across all federal agencies involved in health.

Dr. Rosendale is a fellow of the American college of Osteopathic Surgeons as well as the American College of Surgeons. He was affiliate faculty for the Harvard Decision Systems Group Informatics program and is now affiliate faculty at the University of California San Diego Medical Informatics program. He is involved with several nationwide efforts aimed at promoting healthcare interoperability and open computing.

Dr. Rosendale was a member of the American Quality Alliance (AQA) measures improvement workgroup, an editor for the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) Clinical Informatics specialty board certification prep program, and the Medical Device Coordinating Council (MDICC). He was previously the federal executive sponsor for the ACT-IAC (American Council for Technology and Industry Advisory Committee).

Dr. Rosendale’s health IT background spans many aspects of quality, performance, and outcomes reporting, including being a member of the Surgical Quality Alliance, the Secretary of Health and Human Services “Value Exchanges” program. He is currently Executive Director of the Western Slope Study Group, focused on patient- reported quality health outcome measurement. He was on the executive board for the original VA National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP). He was on the Technical Expert Panel for Clinical Decision Support (CDS), overseeing the Agency for Health Research and Quality (AHRQ) pilot programs at Harvard and Yale Universities. Dr. Rosendale was the Chair of the Surgery Discipline and on the Board of Governors for the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons. He currently chairs the ACOS “Quality” committee.

Dr. Rosendale was the Chief of Surgery for the Grand Junction VA Medical Center and, while in private practice, he was a Chief of Staff and Vice President of an Independent Physician Association (IPA). He is the recipient of the 2006 American College of Osteopathic Surgeons “Presidential Recognition Award” for his contributions on the Surgical Quality Alliance (SQA). He has been widely published in national journals and presented on clinical informatics topics at numerous national venues.
