James Serpell is a Professor Emeritus of Ethics and Animal Welfare at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. A graduate of University College London with a bachelor's degree in Zoology, Serpell earned a PhD in Animal Behavior from the University of Liverpool. They have contributed extensively to the field with over 180 publications and several influential books, including *Animals & Human Society: Changing Perspectives* and *The Domestic Dog*. In addition to teaching veterinary ethics, Serpell's research focuses on companion animal behavior and the history of human-animal relationships, and they currently serve as a Senior Advisor at Dogvatar.
