Dr Connor is a research-led initiative exploring how artificial intelligence can be used to strengthen critical thinking, rather than replace it.

As generative AI becomes embedded in everyday learning, a key question has emerged: can AI be designed to encourage reasoning, reflection, and intellectual independence, instead of shortcutting thinking? Dr Connor is built to explore that question.

Working in partnership with the University of Birmingham, we are running controlled research comparing different forms of AI interaction, including question-based (Socratic) AI, standard AI, and non-AI approaches, to understand how each affects students’ reasoning, engagement, and ability to challenge misinformation.

The project combines AI system design, educational research, and responsible-use principles, with a focus on transparency, safeguarding, and evidence rather than hype. Our aim is to contribute meaningful research to the wider conversation about AI in education and to help shape what good use of AI looks like as these tools become unavoidable.

Dr Connor is currently operating in a research and pilot phase, working with schools, researchers, and educators who are interested in evidence-based approaches to AI and learning.
