Driver First Assist (DFA) is a not-for-profit organisation addressing a critical gap in road safety: what happens in the minutes before emergency services arrive at a road traffic collision.

When a collision occurs, those first on scene are rarely professionals. They are often at-work drivers who must make rapid decisions under pressure, frequently without training, guidance or confidence. DFA exists to turn goodwill and instinct into structured, safe and effective first response capability.

DFA works in partnership with emergency services, industry, academia and government to equip professional and at-work drivers with the skills to:

manage incidents safely at the roadside

preserve life and reduce injury severity

support emergency response — not replace it

The DFA model aligns with Vision Zero’s Safe System, the UK National Road Safety Strategy, and emerging thinking on the Road Injury Chain of Survival, focusing on post-crash response as a core component of road safety and employer responsibility.

Our current focus is on scaling post-crash response capability nationally, embedding it within workplace health and safety frameworks, fleet operations and public service delivery, to improve outcomes for those affected by serious road traffic collisions.
