In 1883, the Al Maktoum family founded the fishing village of Dubai, which has continued to rule Dubai ever since. Pearl mining and maritime business began to flourish in 1892.

That's when traders from all over the world arrive to take advantage of the amazing deals and prices. In 1912, the first "Al Ahmadiyya" school was built in Deira. The original building in Al Ras remains open as a museum showing what life was like more than a century ago.

In 1958, His Highness Sheikh Rashid bin Said Al Maktoum became the ruler of Dubai.
He ruled the emirate for 32 years and developed a major center for international trade. Oil was discovered in Dubai in 1966, attracting foreign trade and stimulating the economy, which over several decades diversified into shipping, finance and tourism.

On December 2, 1971, Dubai and other emirates signed an agreement to establish the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This date is celebrated every year as the National Holiday of the UAE.
