John E. Bies is currently a Senior Attorney at Earthjustice in the D.C. Regional Office. Previously, Bies served as Chief Counsel at American Oversight from 2017 to 2022 and held several notable positions at the U.S. Department of Justice between 2010 and 2017, including Attorney in the Environment & Natural Resources Division and Counselor to the Attorney General. Bies has also worked as a Partner at Covington & Burling LLP and completed a summer internship at the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights. With an impressive academic background, Bies earned a JD with high honors from the University of Chicago Law School and holds a Master of Arts in Political Science from the University of Minnesota and a Bachelor of Arts in Politics, Philosophy & Economics from Pomona College.
