Wave energy without the big chunks of steel.

EBB-FLOW Energy is developing an entirely new form of wave energy converter which has the potential to disrupt the traditional wave energy sector. Instead of the typical rigid structures focusing huge loads onto traditional generators, our device consists of thousands of active generating cells distributed throughout a flexible structure. These cells will be mass-manufacturable using roll-to-roll production techniques, resulting in lower costs and a scalable product that can target commercial opportunities covering applications which require a small amount of power (e.g. powering remote sensors with a few watts) through to utility scale power (100s of kW).

The EBB-FLOW technology was born during a successful collaboration between 4c Engineering and Cheros Srl, bringing together extensive marine renewables R&D experience with cutting-edge soft robotics research.

Having proven out the generation cycle in the lab, the team is now working on demonstrating wave-pressure driven actuation of multiple cells and modules in a controlled demonstrator unit, along with exploring large-scale manufacturing feasibility. We will then work towards a full prototype suitable for tank testing and open-water deployment.
