ebersmith coaching & consulting is a national board governance practice founded in 2023 by Jeff Smith and Brian Ebersole. We help nonprofit boards move from assembled to built.

Most nonprofit boards weren't designed. They were assembled. A seat opens, someone knows someone, a competent person says yes, and over time the board's composition drifts from what the mission actually needs. We help organizations close that gap intentionally, using two trademarked frameworks: Assembled or Built?™ and the 3 Ws + ACE Qualities™.

Engagements typically start with a Board Health Check, a structured diagnostic on composition, culture, and the chair-ED partnership. From there, the menu includes Board Foundations and The Board Build™ for ongoing governance consulting, The Inherited Board™ for executive directors in their first year, Annual Board Retreats facilitated through LEGO® Serious Play® and other hands-on methods, Speaking & Workshops for conferences and learning communities, and an Annual Governance Retainer for graduates of any engagement.

Jeff Smith leads client engagements. He's a BoardSource Certified Governance Consultant and Certified LEGO® Serious Play® Facilitator with nearly 20 years in the nonprofit sector, including seven years inside a private foundation directing a multi-million-dollar capacity-building portfolio across an 11-county region. Brian Ebersole contributes to select projects as strategic advisor, drawing on 20+ years of senior leadership across healthcare, government, education, and nonprofit settings.
