ECONET is registered under the Bombay Public Trust Act (1950) in 1993. We started as an ecological networking organisation connecting people, communities, NGOs, individuals and civil society groups committed together towards conservation, protection and promotion of environment, biodiversity and livelihoods of people dependent on natural resources. We gained its credibility and legitimacy in the development sector as a pioneer organisation to create a space and platform for diverse groups, CBOs, experts, researchers and policy makers seeking alternatives on environmental justice and livelihood sustainability of communities dependent on forest and other natural resources. Our work with the tribal in the Schedule V Areas and the NT/DNT communities in Maharashtra is on a range of issues, such as sustaining and securing rural energy through the energy efficient practices (e.g. Bio-Gas, Improved Cook Stoves, training local youths on renewable energy, educating locals on FRA & PESA, biodiversity conservation and promotion, forest conservation & forest-based livelihood, NTFPs, medicinal plants and wild foods).
