EIM started in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake. Foreign aid workers wanted to learn some Kreyol, while local adults wanted to learn and improve their English – a skill that’s highly valued in Haiti, so a simple language exchange was born.

As different foreigners traveled in and out, the Kreyol classes became repetitive, meanwhile, the dedicated group of Haitian students progressed rapidly. Soon levels were introduced, as well as a textbook, and before we knew it, we had a fullblown English school on our hands.

While foreigners taught the classes at first, the goal was always to transition to local leadership and by January 2012, the US and British volunteers that formed EIM left the country, leaving the school in the capable hands of Brunel and our all-Haitian staff of teachers.

Today EIM is considered one of the highest quality English programs in the country with over 200 students and 16 part-time employees. Over the years we’ve expanded beyond English to provide vocational training, job placement, leadership development, and a robust exchange program where we host dozens of foreign volunteers as they take part in both teaching and tourism activities, seeing a different side of this incredible country.
