Jaap Heringa

Jaap Heringa is a Professor of Bioinformatics at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) and has served as the Head of the Department of Computer Science since 2018. They have an extensive background in bioinformatics, having worked as a Scientific Director at the Netherlands Bioinformatics Center from 2007 to 2014, and held leadership roles at ELIXIR-Netherlands from 2013 to 2016. Jaap's academic journey began with a Bachelor's degree in Mathematical Biology, followed by a Master's and a Ph.D. in Bioinformatics from Utrecht University, where they graduated Cum Laude. Additionally, they were the Group Leader in Bioinformatics at the National Institute for Medical Research in London from 1996 to 2002, and have contributed as a Scientific Lead at the Dutch Techcentre for Life Sciences until 2022.
