Prof. Rolf Backofen studied computer science at the University of Erlangen and earned a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Saarland in December 1994, following research at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI). They received their habilitation from Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich in February 2000 and held the chair for bioinformatics at the University of Jena from November 2001 until June 2005. In 2005, they took up a full professorship at the University of Freiburg, where they also served as Dean and Vice Dean. Currently, Rolf is a member of the Scientific Board at ELIXIR, and their research interests include constraint programming and protein structure prediction. They are a coauthor of the book "Computational Molecular Biology: An Introduction."
