Michael Thompson

Assistant to the Director General at EMBL

Michael Thompson is the Assistant to the Director General at EMBL. Prior to this, they were a Post Doctoral Training Fellow at MRC Harwell Institute from February 2018 to July 2021, where they worked on understanding gonadal sex reversal at the single cell level. From September 2011 to February 2018, they were a Postdoctoral Scholar at University of California, Riverside. From April 2011 to September 2011, they were a Research Associate at UCSF. Their responsibilities there included maintaining mammalian cell cultures and insect cell cultures, expanding cultures for protein extraction, and helping with protein extractions and purifications. Prior to that, from October 2010 to April 2011, they were a caregiver for a client suffering from Alzheimer’s related dementia and pancreatic cancer. Their duties helping the client with dressing, hygiene, eating, and keeping them entertained throughout the day.

Their manager is Edith Heard, Director General. Michael Thompson works with Anne Ephrussi - Director, EICAT, Ewan Birney - Deputy Director General & Joint Director, EMBL & EBI, and Matthias Wilmanns - Head, EMBL Hamburg.
