Sam J.

Sam J. has a strong background in data science and leadership roles. Starting in 2008, they worked as a Data Scientist at Praxair, Inc. where they implemented reinforcement learning to save $3MM on a design project. In 2010, they became the Lead Data Scientist at Daikin Industries, Ltd. and supervised a team to automate ratings by supervised learning, turning an existential threat into a $1BN sales opportunity. From 2013 to 2020, Sam held multiple roles at Commodity Futures Trading Fund, including Portfolio Manager and Head of Data Science, where they coached traders to implement factor investing strategies and created a data science and engineering team for text mining and fraud detection. In 2020, Sam joined Energy Trading as the Head of Data Science, spearheading algorithmic trading strategies and achieving a $15.8MM profit. Currently, at Embroker, Sam holds the position of Data Science Vice President, reducing the ESP loss ratio through machine learning models using demographic data.

Sam J. holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Engineering from the University of Michigan, completed from 2003 to 2008. Before that, Sam J. pursued a Bachelor of Technology (BTech) in Computer Science with a minor in Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, from 1998 to 2003. Additionally, Sam J. obtained a Master of Technology (MTech) in Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, from 2000 to 2003.
