Derek "Spud" Irving is a retired Captain who flew the Airbus A380 at Emirates from 2013 until the conclusion of their career in 2023. They began their aviation journey as an Assistant Chief Pilot at Knighthawk Airlines from 1992 to 1995, followed by a Captain role at Canada 3000 Airlines from 1995 to 2001, where they piloted the Airbus A320/A330. Derek later served as a Captain for various aircraft, including the Airbus A330/A340 and Boeing B777 at Emirates from 2002 until retirement. They hold a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Computer Science from Dalhousie University, earned between 1975 and 1978.
