Ben McNeil

Ben McNeil has a diverse work experience, starting with their role as Co-Founder of Emmi in 2019. At Emmi, they developed carbon financial technology that helps institutional investors prepare for carbon pricing. Ben used machine learning models to fill data gaps on corporate carbon emissions and combined climate science scenarios with financial data to quantify carbon transition risk for companies and portfolios. Ben also served as a Climate Scientist in Residence at Emmi, where they advised on translating climate science into financial language.

Prior to Emmi, Ben founded Metafact in 2018, an open fact-checking platform powered by scientists. The platform aimed to help people make evidence-based decisions by providing reliable information online.

Before their entrepreneurial ventures, Ben held academic positions. Ben was an Adjunct Senior Lecturer at UNSW since 2004 and a Senior Fellow from 2005 to 2009. During their time at UNSW, they led a team in projecting future coral reef calcification estimates under global warming.

In 2013, Ben founded and served as the CEO of Thinkable, an innovation and ideation platform. The platform allowed organizations to host, activate, source, and showcase innovative ideas from top scientists and universities.

Finally, Ben worked as a Post-doctoral Research Fellow in Climate & Oceanography at Princeton University from 2001 to 2004. Ben developed new data science techniques to investigate anthropogenic carbon in the ocean, which led to a publication in Science magazine.

Ben McNeil obtained a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) from Griffith University. Subsequently, they pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Oceanography, specializing in Chemical and Physical aspects, at both the University of Tasmania and CSIRO - Marine and Atmospheric Research. Later, they enrolled at The University of Sydney Business School, where they completed a Master of Economics (MEcon).
