Encounter is a beautifully simple, interactive nature journal that lives on your phone. Whether you’re a nature newbie or seasoned spotter, Encounter will help you build and sustain a daily habit of noticing that will enrich and transform your life.
Tailored, year-round prompts created by nature writer Melissa Harrison will encourage users to seek out things they might otherwise miss, such as the first chiffchaff’s song, the appearance of frogspawn, the return of swifts to our skies from Africa, and the Geminids meteor shower – as well as invitations to join fun citizen science projects such as the Big Garden Birdwatch and the Big Butterfly Count. As the natural world swims vividly into focus through a new practice of daily, mindful attention, users will find themselves tuning into the endlessly rewarding cycle of the seasons, whether they live in the heart of a city or deepest countryside. And the more encounters they experience and find joy in, the more they will be motivated to help and protect the natural world.
On a walk, Encounter can record users’ route on a map and plot discoveries on it via photos, voice notes, audio recordings or text files (including voice-to-text capability), each entry backed by vital metadata such as weather conditions, tides and moon phase. A comprehensive species database and inbuilt AI tools will help identify creatures, plants and natural phenomena, and when users return home they can switch to the desktop version to polish their journal entry and share it to their social channels, if they wish.
 
Our future vision:
Life is better when we’re connected to nature; but nature, in turn, helps us connect to one another. As we build our user base our goal is to add a further layer: Encounter Social. Social users will be able to follow other nature lovers to discover what they’re seeing, doing and hearing, sign up for notifications about their favourite species, receive alerts from chosen locations, and share their findings with others.
