Mat Smith has extensive work experience in journalism and writing. Mat started their career as a writer for the student newspaper, York Vision, where they also served as a section editor, deputy editor, and eventually editor-in-chief. After that, they worked as a freelance writer for The Guardian, contributing to various sections of the newspaper. Mat then joined the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program, where they taught English to junior high and elementary school children. Following that, Mat became a staff writer for Recombu.com. Mat then joined Engadget as a Senior Editor in Japan, where they covered tech news in Tokyo and other parts of Asia and also provided support and guidance to other writers and editors. Mat later became the UK Bureau Chief for Engadget, managing a team of editors and writers based in the UK and Europe. Throughout their career, Mat has also gained expertise in newsletter curation and creation.

Mat Smith attended Crofton School from 1996 to 2001. Mat then enrolled at the University of York in 2003 and completed their Bachelor of Science degree in Economics (Hons) in 2007.
