Nelson Lugo has extensive experience in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry. Nelson began their career at Scios in 1993 as the Department Head of Manufacturing, followed by roles at XOMA as the Director of Pilot Plant Operations and at Dendreon as the Director of Manufacturing. In 2004, they joined ISTA Pharmaceuticals as the Director of Operations, and then moved to Amylin Pharmaceuticals in 2007 as the Senior Director of Contract Manufacturing. Nelson joined Bristol-Myers Squibb in 2012 as the Senior Director of Contract Manufacturing, and later joined AstraZeneca as the Senior Director of Contract Manufacturing and San Diego Site Lead. Nelson continued their career at Nielsen BioSciences, Inc. as the Vice President of Manufacturing, and is currently the Vice President of Manufacturing/CMC at Equillium, Inc.

Nelson Lugo has completed a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree with a focus on Marketing/Management from Adelphi University. Nelson also holds a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Clinical Chemistry from York College of the City University of New York. Additionally, Nelson has participated in a Summer Program in Fermentation Technology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Lastly, they have attended the Center for Executive Development at the University of California, San Diego - Rady School of Management, though it is not specified whether they obtained a degree from this institution.
