Española Humane, affectionately known as the "Little Shelter That Could," is a beacon of compassion and a leader in innovative, lifesaving animal welfare programs. Our mission is simple: to improve the lives of animals in underserved communities by going where the need is greatest. As an open-admissions shelter, we are here without judgment when surrendering a pet becomes the only option.

In 2025, Española Humane cared for more than 3,200 animals, achieved a 90% live release rate, performed over 6,600 spay and neuter surgeries, administered more than 17,000 free vaccines, and completed 771 specialty veterinary procedures for families facing financial hardship. Through innovative programs such as Paws in the Pen, which pairs incarcerated individuals with shelter dogs for training and socialization, and a robust transport network that helped more than 1,000 pets find homes across the country, Española Humane's impact extends far beyond its walls.

Supported by a dedicated team of staff, foster families, and more than 600 volunteers, Española Humane brings vital services directly into the community. We provide free spay and neuter surgeries, vaccinations, affordable urgent veterinary care, and humane education programs for students of all ages. Our Pet Amigos outreach team goes door to door in targeted communities, helping families keep beloved pets in their homes by providing food, supplies, veterinary care, and access to resources. The team also conducts trap-neuter-return (TNR) services to improve the lives of community cats and reduce pet overpopulation.

Fueled by the generosity of donors, partners, and supporters, Española Humane continues to be a beacon of hope, proving that a small shelter with a big heart can transform countless lives, both human and animal.
