Tim Hewison

Remote Sensing Scientist - Calibration And Gsics Coordinator at EUMETSAT

Tim Hewison has an extensive work experience in the field of remote sensing and calibration. Tim began their career at the Met Office in 1990 as a Microwave Instrument Scientist, responsible for designing and operating microwave radiometers for aircraft experiments. Tim also participated in calibration and validation campaigns for satellite underflights. Tim then took on the role of Ground-based Remote Sensing Expert, where they oversaw the acquisition and operation of ground-based microwave radiometers and developed retrieval algorithms for weather prediction systems. During this time, they completed their PhD in Meteorology at the University of Reading with a focus on ground-based remote sensing. In 2007, Tim joined EUMETSAT as a Remote Sensing Scientist and Calibration Team Leader. In this role, they led the radiometric calibration of imaging instruments on EUMETSAT satellites, coordinated inter-calibration projects, and provided scientific guidance to their team. Tim also became involved in the Global Space-based Inter-Calibration System (GSICS), serving as the Chair of the GSICS Research Working Group from 2010 to 2016. Throughout their career, Tim has published scientific research and worked on inter-agency collaborations to harmonize calibration methods for Earth Observation satellites.

Tim Hewison earned a Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree in Physics with Astrophysics from The University of Manchester from 1986 to 1989. Tim later pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Meteorology from the University of Reading between 2002 and 2006.
