Dave Merkel

Dave Merkel is the current CEO at Expel. Before taking on this role, Dave served as the first lady of the Town of Herndon from July 2015 to December 2020. Prior to their time in Herndon, Dave worked as the Chief Technology Officer at FireEye, Inc. from April 2014 to July 2015 and at Mandiant from January 2006 to April 2014. Dave's work experience also includes a Senior Technical Director role at America Online, Inc. from August 1998 to January 2006. In this role, Dave led a team of 30 technologists responsible for protecting AOL and Time Warner's technical infrastructure. Dave was also responsible for the design, implementation, and operation of AOL's production security defenses. Additionally, Dave drove the adoption of Kerberos within AOL's operational environment and chartered the in-house development of a centralized authorization management system. Dave also led the effort to establish a public AOL top-level Certificate Authority and managed AOL's incident response capability. Furthermore, Dave created a program to provide incident response management services to all Time Warner divisions. Lastly, they established a security assurance program to provide security guidance and risk assessments for software, systems, and networks.

The educational career for Dave Merkel would be a BS in Computer Science from the University of Colorado Boulder.
