John Gunnell has a diverse work experience in the field of science. John is currently working as a Scientist at Exponent since March 2021. Prior to that, they were a Postdoctoral Fellow at Northeastern University from October 2016 to November 2020, where they analyzed diverse datasets including satellite temperature, microscopy, and chemical composition. Beginning in June 2009, John worked as a Research Assistant at the Marine Sciences Department UNC-Chapel Hill for seven years. In this role, they designed and executed field sampling methods for naturally abundant radionuclides, organized data analysis into scripted workflows for accuracy and repeatability, and presented their research at international academic conferences.

John Gunnell completed their Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree from the University of Michigan, where they double majored in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and History of Art from 2005 to 2009. Afterward, they pursued their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Marine Sciences from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which they obtained between 2009 and 2016.
