CSKA was established on May 5, 1948 in the Military Club in Sofia.

The club holds the record for most trophies from the Bulgarian First League - 31. Between 1954 and 1962 CSKA was champion in nine consecutive seasons, which is still an unsurpassed national record. The Reds has also won 21 National Cups of Bulgaria and 4 Super Cups. CSKA is as well the most successful Bulgarian team in the European club tournaments, reaching two semi-finals for the European Cup (during the 1966/67 and 1981/82 seasons), as well as four times reaching the quarterfinals of the same tournament. In season 1988/89 CSKA played a semi-final for the Cup Winners’ Cup.

CSKA has given a path to many of the legends of Bulgarian football. Among them are the only Bulgarian who won the Golden Ball - Hristo Stoichkov; the first Bulgarian football player to score in the final of a European club tournament - Emil Kostadinov; the record holder for awards for Footballer №1 of Bulgaria and for goals for the national team - Dimitar Berbatov; the first Bulgarian winner of the Golden Boot - Petar Zhekov, and many others. Zhekov is the best goal scorer in the history of CSKA with 144 goals. Boris Gaganelov is the player with the most appearances - 350.

After the deliberate bankruptcy of the club in 2016, CSKA began its moral revival from the lowest level of Bulgarian football. The Reds has won consecutively the trophies from Fourth League, Third League and Second League.
