Field Section provides diagnostic consultancy for housing associations, local authorities, planning bodies, and mission-aligned developers navigating complex transitions in building safety, net zero, and regulatory change.

We work where technical compliance meets operational reality – diagnosing why systems that work on paper fail in practice, and where to intervene. Our approach combines architectural spatial analysis with ethnographic observation, running two diagnostic sections through the same situation: one tracks built systems (layouts, specifications, material histories); the other tracks situated knowledge (coordination patterns, informal workarounds, person-dependent expertise). Where these readings diverge, the interference reveals what's tacit, misaligned, or structurally dependent.

Established 2025, formalising five years of collaborative practice between an ARB-registered architect (20+ years in housing and planning) and a ethnographic researcher (anthropology, infrastructure studies, policy analysis). Based in Wolverhampton and York, working UK-wide and remote.
