Stefan Walter

Chief Executive Officer

Stefan Walter is the Chief Executive Officer at the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority FINMA since April 2024. Prior to this role, Stefan served as Director General of Horizontal Line Supervision at the European Central Bank from February 2014 to December 2023, overseeing risk supervision related to Eurozone banks, and as Director General of Systemic Bank Supervision, focusing on the largest banks in the Eurozone. Earlier in his career, Stefan was a Principal at EY, leading the Global Regulatory Network, and held the position of Secretary General at the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision at the Bank for International Settlements, where Stefan coordinated the negotiations for the Basel III Capital Accord. Stefan also worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, holding several positions including Senior Vice President and various roles across a 13-year tenure. Stefan holds a Master's degree in International Affairs with a focus on Banking and Finance from Columbia University and a Bachelor's degree in Political Economy from the University of California, Berkeley.
