Kayla Wilson

Project Manager at FirstString Research

Dr. Wilson became a Biomedical Engineer to bring transformative solutions to patients in need. Her work has focused on a variety of chronic health conditions where a comprehensive understanding of the patient’s perspective is needed to develop the right solution. Dr. Wilson earned her PhD in Bioengineering at Clemson University where she developed two diagnostics: a low-cost blood glucose monitoring system and a Point-of-Care diagnostic platform for diabetes. Her designs were based on research in low-resource settings, where devices from resource-rich areas often fail, in order to create solutions that could be sustainable from a business perspective while addressing the needs of the end users. In 2014, Dr. Wilson led the first team outside of MIT to win the Lemelson-MIT CureIt! Prize for the low-cost blood glucose monitoring design, and she went on to become a co-founder in a company based on its design.
