Flourish seeks to make a contribution to the prevention of mental health problems based upon a social model of mental health, rather than a brain-bound model.  At the level of theory development, we seek to create a cross-disciplinary consensus involving contributions from psychotherapy, psychology, philosophy, neuroscience, anthropology, psychiatry and the social sciences - as well from those with lived experience of mental health problems.

We also put our ideas into practice with practical projects aimed at preventing the development of mental health issues in children.  We note that many parents experiencing economic and social deprivation encounter multiple barriers in accessing therapy, a problem that is overlooked in most localities.  A social model leads us to see a parent's psychological history and their current life challenges as being intimately entwined, suggesting that both should be addressed in a holistic fashion. Our lead project is establishing the Integrated Therapy and Advocacy (ITA) model as being an effective way of engaging and helping these parents to create a stable and nurturing family, thereby mitigating against the development of mental health problems in their children.
