Alain Petit has a diverse work experience, beginning in 1996 as a researcher at Vrije Universiteit Brussel. From there, they worked as a functional architect at ADMB in 2000 before becoming a journalist at De Tijd in 2001. In 2004, they joined Intermixt / Publi-T / Finiwo as the Vice Secretary-General, overseeing the daily management of the holdings. From 2001 to 2018, Petit held various roles at several companies, including Eandis, Brugse Maatschappij voor Huisvesting, and Scholengroep Impact. Alain served as the Head of Financial Participations at Eandis, Vice President at Brugse Maatschappij voor Huisvesting, and a Member of the Supervisory Board at Scholengroep Impact. In 2018, they joined Fluvius as the Head of Corporate Finance, responsible for financial planning, treasury, investor relations, and corporate social responsibility, among other areas. Additionally, they served as the President of the CSR Board at Fluvius and Secretary at Fluvius Antwerp. Most recently, in 2022, Petit became a Member of the Supervisory Board at Vivendo.

Alain Petit obtained a Master's degree in Applied Economics from Vrije Universiteit Brussel, where they studied from 1991 to 1996. Prior to that, they attended Koninklijk Atheneum Brugge from 1989 to 1991, focusing on Economics and Mathematics. Furthermore, they have certifications in "Onderhandelen als waardecreatie" and "Inzicht in Financieel beheer" from Vlerick Business School, obtained in 2017 and 2014 respectively.
