Nigel Casey

Special Representative on Afghanistan & Pakistan at Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office

Nigel Casey was appointed as the Prime Minister’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan in May 2021. He is also Director for Afghanistan and Pakistan Directorate (APD) in the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.

Nigel was previously the British High Commissioner to South Africa from April 2017 to May 2021. He was the Prime Minister’s Private Secretary for Foreign Affairs from 2014-2016 and British Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina from 2011 to 2014.

Nigel is a career diplomat who has worked for the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office since 1991. His career to date has been divided between the FCDO in London and five overseas postings. In addition to Sarajevo, he has been posted in Pretoria, Washington D.C, Moscow and New Delhi.

Nigel studied Modern History at Balliol College, Oxford University. He is married to Clare Casey and has two children, a son (born 2003) and a daughter (born 2005).
