Forward Scholars provides one-to-one, in-school tutoring for K–3rd grade students who are not yet reading at grade level. Each student is paired with a trained community volunteer who tutors twice a week using individualized lesson plans created by Site Coordinators—credentialed teachers with literacy expertise. Lessons are guided by assessment data and adapted throughout the year to meet each child’s needs.

Our curriculum is grounded in Book Buddies, a nationally respected tutoring framework developed at Columbia University and the University of Virginia. Book Buddies has been implemented for nearly 40 years in major urban districts, demonstrating consistent success in improving early literacy outcomes. Tutors use evidence-based practices and culturally responsive texts that reflect and affirm students’ identities. This approach not only advances reading skills but also builds strong, trusting student–adult relationships, which research shows improve academic engagement, attendance, and long-term success.

Our work is rooted in Milwaukee’s historically marginalized communities. The majority of our students identify as BIPOC, most are economically disadvantaged, and about one-quarter are English learners. Families, educators, and community partners continue to shape and support our program, ensuring that Forward Scholars not only advances literacy but also builds confidence, agency, and a lifelong love of reading.

In 2024–2025, Forward Scholars served 267 students across nine Milwaukee Public Schools in eight different zip codes. In 2025–2026, we are serving more than 300 students at 10 schools with the support of over 300 trained community volunteers.
