Brian’s expertise lies in conducting complex research and analysis to help companies reduce uncertainty and resolve controversy related to multistate income tax, franchise tax, gross receipts tax and sales tax positions, as well as identifying refund and credit opportunities.

Specific services may include: nexus reviews, sales sourcing analysis, sales taxability studies, apportionment reviews, filing method reviews (separate, combined or consolidated), related party transaction planning (transfer pricing), mergers and acquisitions due diligence (buy or sell side), restructuring and modeling, voluntary disclosure agreement negotiation, audit defense and administrative appeals representation, private letter rulings, net operating loss management and utilization, pass-through entity non-resident withholding and composite filing review, income tax and sales tax reverse audit, ASC 450 and ASC 740 provision consulting for uncertain sales tax and income tax positions, credits and incentives reviews and RAR compliance.

Brian serves as a subject matter expert, thought leader and technical researcher in the SALT community. He assisted in the development of Bloomberg BNA’s state income tax modeling tool, BNA State Tax Analyzer and Net Operating Loss tracker by providing multistate income tax technical research. Brian has authored 60+ articles, including his own column, “The SALT Effect,” in Tax Analyst’s State Tax Notes, where he published various articles on topics ranging from refund processes to cloud computing. His state tax blog, “LEVERAGE SALT,” currently contains over 1,000 blog posts detailing various SALT topics. As a distinguished speaker, he has delivered 60+ presentations speaking at tax planning conferences, webinars and meetings for Bloomberg BNA, EY, Baker Tilly, BDO, CPA societies, Strafford Publications and more.

During his career, Brian has worked in Fortune 500 company tax departments, Big 4 accounting firms and regional firms as a state tax practice leader. Prior to joining FD, Brian was a Managing Director and the Tennessee SALT Practice Leader for BDO.
