John Peterson has extensive work experience in government and public administration. John currently holds the position of Chief Administrative Officer at Frederick County Government in Maryland since April 2023. Prior to that, they worked as the Assistant Chief Administrative Officer at Howard County Government from November 2019 to April 2023. John also held the role of Director of Retirement and Benefits at Howard County Public Schools from January 2019 to November 2019. Before that, they served as the Deputy Human Resources Administrator at Howard County Government from November 2015 to January 2019. Their career in public service began as an Assistant Personnel Officer at Anne Arundel County Government, where they worked from November 2007 to November 2015.

John Peterson received their Bachelor's degree from St. Olaf College, where they studied from 1981 to 1985. John later pursued a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Finance from the University of Baltimore Merrick School of Business, completing their studies from 2003 to 2005. In addition to their formal education, John obtained the SHRM-SCP certification from SHRM in January 2017.
