Free Press Indiana is a nonprofit news organization founded in 2023. Our mission is to fill information gaps with original community-based non-partisan local reporting and work collaboratively with the Indiana news ecosystem to distribute content until every Hoosier has the information they need.

In December 2023, Free Press Indiana launched its first newsroom, Mirror Indy, in Central Indiana. The newsroom boasts an innovative, community-focused structure, and works directly with residents to report on and elevate voices and stories from their own communities in addition to providing much-needed accountability and service journalism across critical topics. Mirror Indy is also home to the Indy Documenters, a program that trains and pays residents to participate in news gathering.

Building on the success of hyperlocal news from Mirror Indy, a statewide newsroom, FPI News, was launched in July 2026 to help all Hoosiers understand the decisions shaping life across Indiana. In addition to posting content daily on the FPI News website and social media platforms, the newsroom prioritizes partnerships with an expanding network of trusted media outlets to support their efforts and meet readers where they are. This approach allows the reach and relevance of journalism to extend across the state.
