Fred Stutzman

Founder and CEO at Freedom

Fred Stutzman began their career in 1998 as a Co-Op at Nortel Networks. In 2000, they became a Software Engineer at The Motley Fool, where they worked on site reliability and scaling. In 2001, they were the Director of Technology at Ibiblio.org (formerly Metalab, SunSITE), where they distributed free software, content, and archival materials. From 2005 to 2011, Fred worked as a Consultant for Technology and Policy Consulting, and as a Graduate Research Fellow at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During this time, they also conducted research on Social Media, Digital Wellbeing, and Privacy Enhancing Technologies. In 2011, Fred became a Postdoctoral Researcher at Carnegie Mellon University, and in 2012 they were a Visiting Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 2011, Fred also founded Freedom, where they are currently the Founder and CEO. At Freedom, they are developing the essential toolset for the future of focused work.

Fred Stutzman began their educational journey at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1996, where they earned a BA in Economics in 2000. Fred then returned to the same institution in 2005 to pursue a Ph.D. in Information Science, which they completed in 2011. During this time, they also obtained a Graduate Certificate in Survey Methodology from the University of North Carolina in 2011. From 2011 to 2012, they worked as a Postdoctoral Scholar at Carnegie Mellon University in Behavioral Economics and Digital Privacy. Additionally, Fred Stutzman is a Certified Information Privacy Professional/United States (CIPP/US) through the International Association of Privacy Professionals, and a Privacy by Design Ambassador through the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner - Ontario, Canada.
