Mario Buono

Director Disease Biology at Freeline Therapeutics

Mario Buono, PhD has a diverse and extensive work experience in the field of disease biology, cancer cell biology, and immunology. Mario currently holds the position of Director of Disease Biology at Freeline since 2023. Prior to that, they served as the Disease Biology Group Leader at Evox Therapeutics Ltd from 2021 to 2023.

From 2018 to 2021, Mario worked as the Co-Principal Investigator in Drug Discovery and Cancer Cell Biology at Evotec and the MRC Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine.

Mario also has experience as a Senior Postdoctoral Researcher in Hematology and Cancer Cell Biology at the MRC Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine from 2012 to 2020. During their tenure, they focused on studying the heterogeneity of the human hematopoietic stem cell compartment and identifying vascular biomarkers in triple negative breast cancer. Mario utilized various techniques such as high-end flow cytometry, single-cell RNA sequencing, and in vivo studies.

Mario's research career began in 2010 when they worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Immunology and Stromal Cell Biology at the Scottish Centre for Regenerative Medicine. Mario gained expertise in primary cell isolation and culture, gene expression analysis, flow cytometry, and ELISA.

Prior to that, they worked at the Telethon Institute of Genetics and Medicine as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Hematology and Metabolism, a PhD student in Medical Genetics focusing on Metabolism, and a Research Intern.

Mario Buono, PhD completed their Master of Science in Pharmacology (MSc) and Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology (B.Sc.) at Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II from 1999 to 2004. Mario then pursued their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Human/Medical Genetics at Seconda Università degli Studi di Napoli from 2004 to 2008. Additionally, they completed the European Course in Genome Sciences/Genomics at the Genomic Applied Research (GEAR) Training Course at Federico II Naples University from 2006 to 2007.
