Cosmin Deciu

Cosmin Deciu has a diverse and extensive work experience in the field of bioinformatics. Cosmin has held various roles in different companies, with a focus on prenatal molecular diagnostics and next-generation sequencing.

Cosmin started their career at Torrey Mesa Research Institute as a Bioinformatics Scientist, where they designed and implemented a relational database for protein database searches. Cosmin also maintained and improved the protein database software.

Cosmin then joined Diversa as a Bioinformatics Staff Scientist, where they developed algorithms for protein identification and implemented high-performance distributed computing software. Cosmin also developed algorithms for spectral quality identification and similarity using machine learning methods.

After that, Cosmin joined Verenium Corp. as a Bioinformatics Staff Scientist II. Here, they developed algorithms for spectral alignment and peak detection in Capillary Electrophoresis and HPLC data. Cosmin also designed MATLAB-based graphical interfaces for peak alignment in NMR data analysis.

Cosmin then moved to Sequenom, where they held multiple roles. As a Senior Director of Bioinformatics, they led the bioinformatics discovery for prenatal molecular diagnostics and managed a team of bioinformatics scientists. Cosmin developed algorithms for accurate classification methods and efficient processing of genomic data. Cosmin also provided bioinformatics and biostatistics support for clinical operations. Prior to this role, they served as a Director of Bioinformatics and Group Leader at Sequenom.

Cosmin later joined Illumina as an Associate Director, Bioinformatics, where they led the bioinformatics development for the VeriSeq NIPT solution. Cosmin also provided bioinformatics support for clinical validation and collaborated on NIPT projects. Cosmin played a key role in worldwide regulatory product registration. Eventually, they got promoted to Director and led bioinformatics development for the TruSight NIPT and next-generation NIPT. Cosmin served as the lead subject matter expert for interactions with regulatory agencies.

Cosmin's most recent work experience is as a Senior Director of Biostatistics at Freenome, a position they started in 2023.
